“Dress for (interview) Success”

Hot Tip Tuesday #2
The old saying “dress for the job you want” sounds like a cliché, but there are some pitfalls around how to make sure you make a proper first impression! The team at JHG often get asked ‘what should I wear to an interview?’, so we feel that it’s time to try answer that age-old question.
The easiest answer to the question of what to wear to an interview is “Appropriately”. You don’t need to wear a three-piece suit for an interview with your local Maccas, and you wouldn’t wear shorts and a t-shirt to an accounting job interview.
The easiest way to identify what you should wear to an interview is to observe the business and try to mimic their style. For example – If you’re applying to work as a barista in your local café, go and have a look at how they dress; If the team are all in black slacks and shirts, then try to bring this theme into the way you dress during the interview. This way, the employer can actually visualise you as part of their team prior to employing you!
An easy rule of thumb to remember with interview wear – It’s easier to overdo it than underdo it. It’s easy to remove a tie or jacket and ‘casualise’ your image than it is to rush around 5-minutes before the interview to dress-up your kit!
Finally – If in doubt? Ask! There is nothing wrong with asking the host of the interview how ‘formal’ the interview is and from there, dress appropriately.
