Glenorchy Jobs Hub connects with local employer supporting Women in Trades

When Gemma Terry approached the Glenorchy Jobs Hub looking for work in the electrical industry, the 27-year-old had low expectations. With no industry experience or electrical qualifications, Gemma never expected she’d be in full-time employment in just a few months.

“They helped me with my resume and got me a foot in the door, which is so helpful when you don’t know anyone in the industry,” Gemma Terry said.

The Glenorchy Jobs Hub connected her with the Tasmanian owned and operated electrical business, Contact Group.

“I started as a fire tester trainee about six months ago and have been enjoying it so much I’m now working towards an apprenticeship as a fire technician,” Ms Terry said.

Leon Thompson, who made the connection, said he knew Contact Group was a strong advocate for women in trades and had won a national award for leading diversity in the industry.

“I wanted to be sure I paired Gemma with a company that’s inclusive and an industry leader when it comes to training and apprenticeships.”

“It’s been great to visit Gemma six months on and see how well she’s settled in and how much she’s enjoying the opportunity,” Leon said.

Contact Group employs around 180 people statewide, with offices in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie.
