From Nepal to New Beginnings: R’s Journey to Success

When R arrived in Australia from Nepal, she brought with her a wealth of experience as a senior teacher and a background working alongside international organisations. Despite her impressive credentials, R faced significant resistance navigating the Australian job market. Like many new arrivals, she struggled to translate her skills and experience into local opportunities and was unsure where to begin her journey.

R’s turning point came when her partner referred her to the Glenorchy Jobs Hub. There, she was introduced to Jobs Coach, Can Trinh who took the time to understand R’s strengths, aspirations, and the value she could offer employers.

Can worked closely with R to tailor her job applications, ensuring her skills and international experience resonated with local employers. Together, they mapped out a career pathway that aligned with R’s passion for education, connecting her with TasTAFE to pursue further study in childcare—her long-term goal. In the meantime, Can also supported her in applying for retail roles to gain valuable local experience.

When R was invited for an interview with a major local retailer, R’s job coach stepped in to provide practical support, including interview practice and sharing tips and techniques to help R build her confidence and polish her responses. R embraced the assistance, overcoming language barriers and preparing thoroughly for the big day.

Her hard work paid off! R was successful in her interview and was offered the position. Her job coach continued to work with her  offering support with onboarding and ensuring R felt comfortable in her new role.

Reflecting on her journey, R shared:

      “I’m so happy, and in the interview, they asked very similar questions to what we prepared and practiced together.”
