Hot Tip Tuesday #3

There’s an adage in recruitment circles that goes “the best way to get a job is to already have a job”, and for the team at GJH we have seen on many occasions how this is pretty accurate.

But what happens if you’re not currently employed? Or what if you’re keen on an industry change?

If you’re concerned about a gap in your resume, or if you’re looking to return to work after a career break, or you might be looking to explore roles that are different from your current or past careers, please consider Volunteering as a potential pathway to your next opportunity.

There are numerous ways that exploring volunteering opportunities may assist in your career journey, including

  • Building and expanding your network – you never know who you’ll meet through these opportunities

  • Demonstrating a can-do, and community minded attitude (which employers love!)

  • Building (or assisting in rebuilding) your confidence and skills

  • Gaining fresh referees who can vouch for you on-the-job

  • Exploring opportunities you may not have previously considered

  • Demonstrating to employers you’re keen to get up and have a go

Rest assured, just because you’re a volunteer does not mean you can be taken advantage of. As a volunteer you’re entitled to your rights prescribed through the FairWork ombudsman. You must be provided a healthy and safe workspace, have coverage by adequate Workcover, gain appropriate training based on your duties and not be exploited through overly long work hours or poor conditions.

The JHG team are here to help you with identifying and exploring volunteering opportunities. If you would like to discuss these further, please get in touch with the team at JHG on 1300 084 307 or email jobshub@gcc.tas.gov.au
