"Labour Hire and Recruitment Agencies"

Hot Tip Tuesday #6
If you’re concerned about a career gap on your resume, or you may be interested in ‘sampling’ a new industry, one of the best options can be via temporary or labour-hire opportunities.
Labour Hire and Recruitment Companies are a great way for people to start a career, gain additional skills and find temporary or permanent roles across a range of industries.
In June 2024 over 416,500 people were employed by a labour hire company. In August 2022, for people currently employed 591,800 found their current main job through a labour hire or employment agency with 81% working Full Time Hours.
There are two main recruitment pathways offered through recruitment and labour hire companies:
Temp/Labour hire is when someone is employed by the labour hire agency and is then contracted to a host firm. Employees are technically employed by the labour hire agency who pays their wage, and all entitlements then charges the host firm. These are temporary roles however they can often lead to permanent employment.
Direct Placement is when the recruitment company will place someone permanently with the employer. These roles often are higher skilled, but you can find entry level jobs in this area as well.
For most employers looking at your work history when you apply for a role with them, the fact that you have labour hire or temporary jobs on your resume is usually not seen as a negative (in fact, many employers see this as you having flexibility and have a can-do attitude to finding work!). Labour Hire and Recruitment Companies are a tool job seekers can use in their employment journey but always make sure that it aligns with your aims and goals.
