"Hot tips (to avoid!)"

Hot Tip #7

For the past few weeks we’ve been talking about the “to-do’s” of your jobsearch, so this week, the team at GJH have put together a brief list of things to avoid when looking for jobs.

1 – Going through the motions.
Job searching can be a drag. We get it. Unfortunately just sending out a bunch of resumes to as many jobs you see on Seek is not the most productive method of looking for work. Many recruiters we have spoken to can sometimes tell when candidates are just firing off applications for the sake of it; careless errors in cover letters and ‘generic’ applications can make it look like you’re not putting effort into your output.
Our suggestion – really focus on the genuine applications you’re interested in, as opposed to firing off a bunch of half-baked apps. Ask for help to make sure your application and resume are polished and shine the best light on you as an applicant.

2 – You can’t just rely on ‘online’
Whilst it is true that a large portion of the advertised job market is found online, you shouldn’t solely rely on this as your primary method of application. For many entry level and unskilled roles being face-to-face with a potential employer does still bring advantages. Obviously this advice is industry-specific, but mixing up your application methods to include face-to-face or phone canvassing may open up opportunities that might not be found via traditional online methods. Face-to-face can be daunting at first but the team at GJH are here to assist you with strategies for approaching employers if you want to know more!

3 – Going it alone
With many of our participants at the Jobs Hub currently unemployed or underemployed, you’re not facing this on your own.
Statistically, most people you’ll meet have dealt with at least one period of unemployment or underemployment in their lifetimes. Whilst everyone’s circumstances are different, the fact is that unemployment is not forever, and it’s not insurmountable. There are resources available to help you with your job search efforts (like us!), but also to assist with your physical and mental wellbeing. Don’t be afraid to speak up, there is help available.
Lean in to your networks, your sport or social clubs, families, friends and former co-workers. Don’t be too proud to ask for help. We’ve all been there, and generally people are more than willing to lend a hand!

We could write for days about this sort of thing, but we’re even more passionate about helping you in-person. If you would like to discuss these tips, or anything related to your job search further, please get in touch with the team from the Glenorchy Jobs Hub on 1300 084 307 or email info@jobshubglenorchy.com.au
