"Keep your email address and voicemail professional"

Hot Tip Tuesday #12

We get it. You’ve had your email address since you were 13, and you haven’t re-recorded your voicemail since 2009.

You probably don’t even think about these things. But you should!

We couldn’t begin to count the times we, as recruiters, have cringed at someone’s email address or voicemail. In terms of first impressions, many times this is the textbook definition of what first impressions represent, and can be the thing that could be stopping you from progressing to the next stage of recruitment.

As always – if in doubt, change it!

There are myriad free email servers out there that you can utilise for your applications and jobsearching so you don’t have to use your old faithful “radlad420@hotmale.com”. Using a more ‘professional’ address can make your first impression much less cringy! A simple ‘firstname.lastname.01@gmail.com’ may help your application come across a lot more legitimate.

Same goes for your phone’s voicemail. The hilarious hello….hello…. yeah nah I can’t hear you…..” voicemail message doesn’t really cut it when a recruiter or employer is calling to offer you an interview.

We recommend (strongly!) that if you’re serious about your jobsearching that you take time to ensure these factors aren’t holding you back. You only get one chance to make a first impression – don’t embarrass yourself!

The team from the Glenorchy Jobs Hub are always here to assist you with tightening up your applications. If you would like to gain additional tools and tips on landing the job you want, get in touch with the team at GJH on 1300 084 307 or email jobshub@gcc.tas.gov.au
