“Defining work experience in your starter resume”

While education offers essential knowledge, actual, practical work experience equips you with skills that are invaluable for entering the job market or determining your ideal career path.

When you’re just starting out dabbling in the job market, it can feel daunting to approach employers when you don’t have current practical “work experience”. Acquiring work experience can enhance your resume, making you a stronger candidate for job applications, but how do you build it from scratch?

Work experience can take many forms, from working in a café to shadowing a carpenter. Even helping out in your local footy club in the canteen or as a ball-kid can give you a leg-up in the experience stakes. You don’t have to get paid to gain transferrable skills; anything you do that proves you have *some* work ethic can help build your resume. Additionally, these non-paid experienced can assist in building the development of professional relationships, job references, and the possibility of future employment.

The professional work environment is very different from your school environment. Work experience helps you learn about acceptable workplace culture, expectations and professional behaviours. These are skills you can only experience in the workplace!

More highly valued essential skills work experience can provide you with are:

  • Communication

  • Teamwork

  • Problem-solving

  • Time management
