“Don’t be afraid to take a moment…”

We get it. The recruitment process can be a drag. Often it feels like you’re doing all the right things with your applications and your interviews but feeling like it’s just ‘not happening’...

The one of the biggest things we see as career mentors is, sadly, candidates feeling like they don’t know what else to do. The grind of looking for work but getting knock backs can be demoralising for the best of us.

If you’re feeling like you’re banging your head up against the wall with your job search, the best thing you can do is take a moment and reassess! One thing we suggest to clients at GJH is that sometimes less can be more; It’s often better to stop, take a moment with your applications and really drill down on what you’re actually achieving.

• Is the application you’re writing good quality or are you going through the motions?

• Is your resume both up-to-date and relevant to what you’re applying for?

• Are you utilising your time as best as possible?

• Are you applying for the right job, or every job you can see?

There are many candidates who think that by applying for everything you’ve got better odds of getting anything. Yes, this might get you something in the short term, but if you’re looking for sustainable, ongoing and satisfying employment it’s often best to focus on a great application for the “right” job as opposed to a bunch of half-baked application for “anything”.

Additionally, by doing a bit of a deep dive on what you’re putting ‘out there’, you might be surprised at things you think you’re doing right may need a bit of a tweak. Sometimes inadvertent errors can slip through if you’re just pumping out the applications. Best practice is to really take a minute to ensure that the application you’re producing is 100% correct!

And if you’re in doubt, never be afraid to ask for help! There are countless resources available (and often for free) who are here to help you with this process. There will be some great resources in your networks who will be very keen to assist you with giving your job search process the once over. As Einstein remarked “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”
