“Be Careful with AI: Your Job Application Still Needs YOU!”

It seems these days that every website, app or program you use has a build-in AI helper. These AI tools are everywhere, and they can make writing your resume or cover letter feel a whole lot easier. But before you place all your trust in the machine and hit “submit,” here’s why you need to stay switched on when using artificial intelligence for your job applications.

AI is a great helper, NOT a replacement.
It’s tempting to let AI write your whole resume or cover letter, but employers can spot a generic, copy-paste application a mile away. Trust us, as recruiters we’ve seen a lot of applications that on face-value “look” good, but when you start to read them you realise they are not actually saying anything! Your application should always sound like you—your words, your achievements, your story - because it’s your way of selling you!

Why does this matter?

• AI can miss the mark: Sometimes, AI tools make mistakes or include details that don’t fit your experience. Always double-check for accuracy!

• Authenticity counts: Employers want to get to know the real you, not a robot. Make sure your application reflects your personality and what makes you unique.

• Cookie-cutter content stands out (for the wrong reasons): Recruiters read hundreds of applications. If yours sounds just like everyone else’s, it won’t stand out.

Hot Tips for Using AI Wisely:

• Use AI to help brainstorm or get started, but alwayspersonalise your applications.

• Proofread everything—twice! Make sure details are correct and the tone feels like you. Also, read it out aloud – make sure what is written actually sounds correct.

• Add your own examples, stories, and achievements. That’s what employers remember.

• If you’re not sure, ask a friend, mentor, or career advisor to read over your application.

AI can be a powerful tool, but it’s your unique skills, personality, experiences, and voice that land you the job. Let AI help—but make sure you’re still in the driver’s seat!
