"Why You Should Call the Contact Person Before You Press Apply"

Hot Tip Tuesday #26
"Why You Should Call the Contact Person Before submitting your application"
When it comes to job applications, a little extra effort can make a big difference. One of the most effective—yet often overlooked—steps is reaching out to the contact person listed in the job ad. Here’s why making that call can set you apart, and how to do it well.
Why Call the Contact Person?
- It humanises your application. Most hiring managers only see names on a screen. A quick, thoughtful conversation gives them a voice to associate with your name.
- It shows initiative and enthusiasm. Reaching out before applying signals you’re serious about the role and proactive in your approach.
- You gain insight. You might learn about the team, culture, or key challenges—info that can help you tailor your application and stand out from the crowd.
How to make the call work for you
Be Prepared!
Read the job ad thoroughly.
Research the organisation: understand its mission, recent projects, or challenges.
Prepare 2–3 intelligent questions that can’t be answered by the ad (see examples below).
Have your pen and notebook ready to jot down key points.
Introduce Yourself Clearly
“Hi, my name’s [Your Name]. I’m calling about the [Job Title] role advertised. Is now an okay time to ask a quick question or two about the position?”
Ask Smart Questions
This isn't the time to ask about salary or hours. Instead, try:
“What qualities make someone successful in this role or team?”
“Can you tell me a bit more about the team culture or how this role fits into current projects?”
“Is there anything not in the job ad that you think a strong applicant should know?”
Thank Them & Reference the Call in Your Application
“Thank you for your time, I really appreciate it. I’m looking forward to submitting my application.”
And finally, In your cover letter, mention the call:
“After speaking with [Their Name] about the role, I was particularly drawn to [something insightful they shared]…”
Bonus Pro Tip!
Even if the contact person doesn’t offer new information, the impression you leave can nudge your application to the top of the pile. A genuine, professional conversation can make you memorable for all the right reasons.
