Hot Tip Tuesday #37

Congrats on Your First Job! Now What?

Landing your first job is a huge milestone - equal parts exciting and daunting. You’ve nailed your application and the interview, but now comes the real start of your working life. So what do you need to know to set yourself up for success?

First things first: sort out the basics. In Australia, you’ll need a Tax File Number (TFN) so your employer can pay you correctly. If you don’t already have one, apply through the ATO. Without it, you’ll be taxed at a much higher rate. Next is your bank account. Most employers pay via direct deposit, so make sure you’ve got an account ready and provide your BSB and account number. Setting up a linked savings account is a smart move too — even small amounts add up over time.

You’ll also be introduced to the world of superannuation. Your employer must contribute a percentage of your wages (currently 11.5%) into a super fund. If you’ve already opened an account, give those details to your workplace; if not, you’ll be assigned to a default fund. Don’t ignore this - keeping all your super in one place from the beginning helps you avoid “lost” accounts down the track.

Once the paperwork is sorted, it’s time to think about what work will actually look like. Your employment agreement should outline your rate of pay, hours, breaks, and entitlements. Double-check that you’re being paid at least the minimum award rate for your industry — the Fair Work Ombudsman website is a handy tool here.

On your first day (and beyond), the best things you can bring are enthusiasm and reliability. Show up on time (ideally a little early!), ask questions, and take notes. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes - they’re part of learning - but do take responsibility and look for ways to improve. Employers notice attitude often more than skills, and a positive, proactive approach will set you apart.

A few quick tips to keep in mind:

  • Be respectful and professional with everyone — from managers to customers.

  • LEAVE YOUR PHONE ALONE! – When you’re on shift, best practice is to leave your phone in your bag, car or *anywhere* that isn’t in your hands

  • Budget your first few pays so you don’t burn through them.

  • Save a little each week, even if it’s just $10.

  • Keep your resume updated with new skills and responsibilities.

Most importantly, remember that your first job isn’t just about earning money — it’s the beginning of building experience, confidence, and independence. Take it seriously, but also enjoy the ride. Each shift teaches you something new, and every payslip is proof you’re moving forward.

And remember - You have a team behind you. Whether it be friends, family, your school careers counsellor or the teams across the Jobs Hubs Network, we're all here to support you and cheer you on. Don't be afraid to ask for help - get in touch!
