"How to Handle Skills and Psychometric Testing"

Hot Tip Tuesday #41
“How to Handle Skills and Psychometric Testing”
You’ve applied for a job and feel confident about your chances -woo!- then an email lands asking you to complete an “online assessment”. These tests can sound intimidating, but they’re simply another way for employers to learn more about your strengths and how you might fit their team. With the right approach, you can walk in calm and well prepared.
🧠 What are these tests, really?
Psychometric and skills tests help employers see how you think, problem-solve, and communicate. They might include:
Aptitude tests – measuring verbal, numerical or logical reasoning.
Personality questionnaires – exploring your work style, values and preferences.
Situational judgement tests – asking what you’d do in realistic workplace scenarios.
Practical skills tests – such as typing speed, computer use or technical knowledge.
No single test decides whether you get the job. Employers use them alongside your interview, experience, and references to build a full picture.
How to prepare
You can’t “cram” for these tests, but you can get familiar with the format. Search online for free practice tests - especially in verbal and numerical reasoning - to reduce surprises on the day.
Make sure your device and internet connection are working, turn off distractions, and read the instructions carefully before you begin. Take your time to understand each question, and don’t rush. It’s better to get a few questions right than many guessed wrong.
If the test is timed, practise pacing yourself. If it’s untimed, focus on accuracy and clear thinking.
Stay calm and be yourself
Personality or judgement tests don’t have “right” or “wrong” answers - they’re looking for honesty and consistency. Trying to second-guess what an employer wants usually backfires.
Treat the test as a chance to show how you naturally approach work. Get a good night’s sleep, stay hydrated, and give yourself space to focus.
Remember, employers aren’t searching for “perfect” candidates - they’re looking for genuine people who fit the role and culture.
Final thought
These assessments are just one piece of the puzzle. With a calm head, honest answers, and a bit of preparation, you’ll handle them like a pro.
