Events like these bring employers, training providers and jobseekers together in one place. For people exploring their options, considering a change, or simply wanting to learn more about what’s out there, they can be a valuable way to start conversations and gather information.

What is a job fair?

Jobs Fairs and Careers Expos are events where employers and organisations gather to talk about their work, their industries and the opportunities they offer. That might include job vacancies, apprenticeships, traineeships, training pathways or simply advice about how to enter a particular field.

Some job fairs focus on a single industry, while others bring together a wide range of employers and education providers. General careers expos can be especially helpful if you are still exploring your options or want to learn more about the pathways available across different industries.

One of the biggest benefits of attending a careers expo is the chance to speak directly with employers and industry representatives.

Instead of relying solely on online applications, you have the opportunity to introduce yourself, ask questions and gain a better understanding of different workplaces and career pathways.

Preparing before you arrive

    After speaking with several employers it can be easy to forget details. A few quick notes can make follow-ups much easier later.


Talking to employers on the day

When approaching an exhibitor stand, a simple introduction and a genuine question is usually the best place to start. Even if an organisation is not currently advertising a job that suits you, the conversation may still be useful. The person you speak with may suggest training pathways, other employers to explore, or steps you can take to enter that industry.

It’s also helpful to keep conversations friendly and concise, especially if others are waiting to speak with the exhibitor.

One of the most valuable things you can do after attending a careers expo is follow up.

If you collected contact details or had a useful conversation, sending a short message afterwards can help reinforce the connection. Mentioning something specific you discussed can make the message feel more personal and memorable.
