Labour Hire and Recruitment Agencies

Looking for work often feels like you need experience to get experience.

If you’re returning to work after a break, changing careers, building confidence, or simply trying to get your foot in the door, labour hire and recruitment agencies can be a surprisingly powerful pathway into employment.

For many people, temporary or contract work becomes more than just a short-term solution - it becomes the first step toward long-term career opportunities, new skills, and valuable industry connections.

Recruitment and labour hire companies work with businesses across a huge range of industries including hospitality, administration, construction, manufacturing, warehousing, health care, transport, customer service, and more. Employers often use these agencies when they need reliable staff quickly, which can create opportunities for jobseekers who are ready to work and willing to learn.

There are generally two main ways these agencies operate:

Temporary or Labour Hire Roles

In a labour hire arrangement, you are employed by the agency itself and placed with another business (often called the “host employer”). The agency manages your pay, entitlements, and employment arrangements while you complete work with the host company.

These roles are usually temporary or casual to begin with, but they can often lead to ongoing or permanent employment if you prove yourself reliable, adaptable, and willing to contribute.

For many jobseekers, labour hire roles can also provide:

  • Recent work history for your resume

  • Exposure to different workplaces and industries

  • New practical skills and experience

  • Professional referees and networking opportunities

  • A chance to “test drive” a new career path before committing long-term

Direct Placement Recruitment

Recruitment agencies also help employers find permanent staff through direct placement roles.

In this situation, the agency helps match candidates to a business, but you become an employee of the company itself rather than the recruitment agency.

These roles can range from entry-level positions through to highly skilled or specialised careers, depending on the industry and employer needs.

One common concern jobseekers have is whether temporary or labour hire work looks “bad” on a resume. In reality, most employers see it very differently. Short-term work often demonstrates flexibility, initiative, resilience, and a willingness to stay active in the workforce. It can show employers that you’re motivated, adaptable, and open to learning - all qualities many businesses value highly.

Of course, labour hire and recruitment agencies are just one tool in your employment journey, and they won’t suit everyone or every career path. The key is making sure the opportunities you pursue align with your goals, interests, and long-term plans.

If you’re unsure where to start, the team at Glenorchy Jobs Hub can help connect you with local recruitment and labour hire agencies, explain how the process works, and help you prepare for opportunities.

Whether you’re looking to gain experience, rebuild confidence, explore a new industry, or simply get moving again, temporary opportunities can sometimes open doors you didn’t expect.
