"Nail your Elevator Pitch"

Hot Tip Tuesday #32
"Nail your Elevator Pitch"
Imagine you step into a lift with a potential employer. You’ve only got the time it takes to reach the next floor to introduce yourself; what would you say?
That’s the idea behind an elevator pitch: a short, confident introduction that explains who you are, what you do (or want to do), and what makes you worth remembering.
A good elevator pitch isn’t just for elevators. You can use it at networking events, job fairs, or even when you meet someone new who asks, “So, what do you do?”
Here’s a simple formula to build your own:
· Who you are– Start with your name and what you’re currently doing (studying, working, or job seeking).
· What you bring – Share a skill, strength, or passion area.
· Where you’re going – Mention the type of role or industry you’re interested in.
For example:
"Hi, I’m Sam. I’ve just finished my Certificate III in Community Services and I really enjoy working with young people. I’m looking for opportunities in youth support roles where I can build on my training and make a difference."
Why is this important? Because first impressions matter. Having a polished pitch means you won’t be caught off guard when opportunity knocks—you’ll be ready to speak with confidence and leave people with a clear picture of what you offer. It also shows employers that you’ve thought about your career direction and know how to communicate it clearly.
The best way to prepare is to write your pitch down, then practice saying it out loud until it feels natural. Try it in front of a mirror, record yourself, or practice with a friend. Keep it conversational, not robotic - think of it as a friendly introduction, not a sales pitch. With practice, your elevator pitch becomes second nature, ready to use whenever the moment arises.
👉 Keep it short (20–30 seconds), practice it until it feels natural, and be ready to adapt it depending on who you’re talking to.
A clear elevator pitch can help you stand out and make connections that open doors - sometimes literally! And remember, the team are here if you need help. Contact Glenorchy Jobs Hub 1300 084 307 or email jobshub@gcc.tas.gov.au for a chat!
