Tasmanian Innovation Meets Local Talent: Sentinel Boats Finds New Team Members Through Jobs Hub Initiative

In a win for local industry and employment, Glenorchy Jobs Hub has helped connect homegrown talent with one of Tasmania’s most innovative manufacturers—Sentinel Boats.

Sentinel Boats, a wholly Tasmanian-owned company, specialises in the design and manufacture of rugged high-density polyethylene watercraft. With a strong commitment to quality, safety, and employing a local workforce, the company has become a standout example of modern manufacturing rooted firmly in the Glenorchy area.

Keen to find a fresh approach to recruitment, Sentinel’s HR team partnered with Glenorchy Jobs Hub to try something different from traditional online job listings. The result? A targeted information session tailored for local jobseekers in the Glenorchy LGA.

The session provided attendees with insights into the unique work done at Sentinel Boats, along with an invitation to tour the Derwent Park facility. This hands-on experience gave potential recruits a firsthand look at the craftsmanship and teamwork behind every vessel produced.

From there, four participants undertook short-term work experience placements to trial the fit. Of the 4 participants, three impressed the team and were offered ongoing, permanent positions, with another being sourced by Sentinel's participation at the 2025 Hobart and Southern Tasmania Employment & Careers Expo. In further exciting news, two of the successful new employees will be offered the opportunity to undertake apprenticeships, setting them on long-term career paths in advanced manufacturing.

“This is exactly the kind of outcome we love to see,” said a Glenorchy Jobs Hub spokesperson. “Not only did Sentinel gain multiple capable, enthusiastic new team members, but local jobseekers got the chance to explore real career opportunities in a growing Tasmanian organisation.”
